Tribal Collections StockThroughout the ages, a fine handmade rug has been an important part of Eastern Culture and a symbol of enduring art.

In recent years there has been a significantly increased interest in these knotted pile rugs, with many books, introductory texts and specialised works more readily available to the general public. Yet despite all this additional research, the subject of rugs still confuses some people. However, perhaps the most important change in perception is to view these rugs not just as a floorcovering, with various levels of technical skill, but as a true work of art.

For thousands of years woman in various parts of Central Asia, Persia and the Orient have been handweaving double(giordes) or single (senneh) knotted pile rugs in their homes and nomadic encampments.
These woman learned their weaving skills at an early age, taking months or even years to complete the beautiful pile rugs and flatwoven kilims that were created for use in every aspect of daily life.
From the tribal tents of nomadic chieftans, to the Palaces of the Sultans, rugs were not only traditional floor coverings, but used as tent decorations, grain bags, camel and donkey bags, sofa covers and prayer rugs, as well as for ceremonial occasions.

The very finest and intricately patterened of these weavings comprised a young womans dowry; symbols of her dreams and inspirations for perhaps, fertilty, protection, or prosperity, often intermixed with a wealth of sacred motifs to create carpets that would represent the unique personality of each weaver.

Carpet WeaversThe age old tradition of rug making survives today despite dramatically changing lifestyles. Local customs have been modified to include the use of sophisticated patterns and modern technology, but the skill of the experienced artists and their individual interpretation of motifs and colors ensures the highest quality is still maintained in the rugs and kilims of today.
